The newly developed Venus Engine FHD image processor enables higher-speed, higher-performance while compiling the Intelligent Resolution technology. The triple CPUs in this imaging engine dramatically speeds up processing while achieving exceptional noise reduction performance. With its high-sensitivity CCD and the brightness of the lens, minimum illumination of the Lumix LX5 is as low as 3 lux while shooting video.

The predecessor DMC-LX3 played a big role to cease the pixel count war by adopting 1/1.63-inch CCD for 10.1-megapixel recording to realize the unprecedented picture quality with a compact digital camera and even to establish a new premium compact camera category in the market. The CCD in the LX3, which was highly acclaimed from specialists worldwide, is redesigned to achieve further expansion of dynamic range by increasing the sensitivity by approx. 31% and the saturation by approx.38% compared to the LX3. It is made possible by the improvement of on-tip-lens design with larger light concentration and VCCD expansion while deepening the photo diode to manage richer signal more effectively.

The result is a high resolution, noise-less pictures even in high sensitivity recording and richly reproduced gradation in highly contrasted situations with the exquisitely wide dynamic range. Taking advantage of the high sensitivity CCD and the brightness of the lens, minimum illumination of DMC-LX5 is as low as 3 lux in movie recording.

Record HD videos in AVCHD Lite

In addition to Motion JPEG images, the DMC-LX5 can record high-definition motion picture in AVCHD Lite. It features almost doubling the recording time in HD quality compared with the conventional Motion JPEG format. The picture quality is greatly enhanced thanks to the newly added Intelligent Resolution technology.

The LX5 also features Dolby Digital Creator to record high quality audio.

In movie recording, the DMC-LX5 goes further than simply recording HD movies. Apart from the movie recording capability of conventional digital compact cameras, the DMC-LX5 also features a Creative Movie mode, which lets the user set the shutter speed and aperture manually to make even more impressive movies. Changing the shutter speed brings special effects to movies, which is especially suitable for shooting fast-moving subject. The ability to control the aperture is convenient when there are several subjects at different distances and it is desired to have each of them stand out. My Color mode is also available in movie recording.

Ergonomic design for easy controlThe Lumix LX5 has also been redesigned externally--with a thicker grip making it easier to hold and a newly-incorporated turn-and-push jog dial achieves various selection and setting more quickly. The Lumix LX5 also features a hot shoe, which allows for the attachment of a wide-variety of accessories, such as an optional Live View Finder which helps shooting under strong daylight with high visibility or an external flash. The 1:1 square format setting is added in the aspect ratio option which can be selected with the switch at the side of the lens barrel.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 digital compact camera The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 was introduced with grandeur during an international press meeting. The decision to not go for a higher resolution amount, but instead for improvements, was received positively. The expectations were high up, while the camera still had to prove itself in practice. The paper specifications Panasonic revealed looked excellent. In addition, the Panasonic LUMIX LX3 has all a compact camera needs to appeal to the enthusiastic photographer. You name it: a bright LEICA DC-VARIO SUMMICRON f/2.0-f2.8 wide angle zoom lens, a solid and nicely finished housing and versatile setting possibilities.

Zoom range of the Panasonic Lumix LX3 In practice, the camera lives up to its expectations. It is a nice camera to shoot with; it is perfect to work with on the street, relaxed shooting, being one with the camera and the object. The optical range might be of minor importance to the masses, for what is a camera without tele? The purists among us will not go for the tele range, but in fact for the 24mm wide angle and appreciate it. Deciding for the 2.5x zoom range is a therefore a choice based on an eye for quality. To maximize the optical performance of the LEICA lens, it was a rightful decision to optimize the range to the determined quality.

Panasonic LX3 incorporates a Leica lens The lens is of excellent high quality, with hardly any distortion or vignetting, with high central sharpness even towards the edges. And although the LEICA lens unfortunately suffers from visible chromatic aberration, we take that for granted. The Panasonic LX3's resolution is high and suffices greatly to be able to get the most out of the camera. The improvements related to the pixel quality are noticeable, even more so when compared to the LX2, however, for now, they are still somewhat scarce. Improvements have been made, that is for sure, and concerning the ISO sensitivity it is now possible to use up to and including 400 ISO without a problem, with 800 ISO as an emergency stop. Around 800 ISO and higher ISO remains a problem and image quality drops visibly.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 image quality Color reproduction is extremely accurate and the vivid colors offer a fresh result rich in contrast. The combination of a bright lens and an optical image stabilizer enable low ISO use which prevents the image quality from getting damaged by noise. Add to this the improved dynamic range and you're fine with ISO range up to and including 400. It might not be perfect yet, however; the improvement is huge.

Panasonic LX3 - Beautiful digital camera with potential Panasonic has dealt with criticism of Megapixel race opponents in a serious way, and leaves a positive impression with the LX3. This is an impression with which Panasonic once again distinguish themselves from the crowd. The improvements are visible or at least measurable, and do not lead to the absolute top compact camera, but Panasonic clearly started something that should be continued as far as we are concerned. It's a beautiful camera with a lot of potential; a camera that lets you shoot how it was meant in the first place. Or are we wandering off now?... In any case: the LX3 is absolutely recommendable!

Panasonic LX3 - SDHC memory card The Panasonic LX3 is delivered including around 50MB of internal memory. A nice gesture and perhaps convenient for a few moments, however, if you want to get on with serious shooting, then obviously you will purchase a memory card. RAW enthusiasts have to consider some 16MB per image, and if you shoot in a combination of RAW+JPEG you will have to take into account that some 20MB has to be stored per image. A high quality JPEG picture takes up 4MB. To be honest, you will get the maximum out of the Panasonic LUMIX LX3 when shooting in RAW, so we stick to that for now. Our advice is to purchase an SDHC card with a minimum of 4GB storage capacity, although 8GB and higher holds more space in reserve while photographing.

Pixel pitch is the distance from the center of one pixel to the center of the next measured in micrometers (µm). It can be calculated with the following formula:
Pixel pitch =   sensor width in mm  × 1000

The area of one pixel can be calculated by simply squaring the pixel pitch:

You could also divide sensor surface area with effective megapixels:

Pixel density

Pixel density can be calculated with the following formula:
Pixel density =  ( sensor resolution width in pixels )² / 1000000
sensor width in cm
One could also use this formula:
Pixel density =   effective megapixels × 1000000  / 10000

Sensor resolution

Sensor resolution is calculated from sensor size and effective megapixels. It's slightly higher than maximum (not interpolated) image resolution which is usually stated on camera specifications. Sensor resolution is used in pixel pitch, pixel area, and pixel density formula. For sake of simplicity, we're going to calculate it in 3 stages.

1. First we need to find the ratio between horizontal and vertical length by dividing the former with the latter (aspect ratio). It's usually 1.33 (4:3) or 1.5 (3:2), but not always.

2. With the ratio (r) known we can calculate the X from the formula below, where X is a vertical number of pixels:

(X × r) × X = effective megapixels × 1000000    →   
X = √  effective megapixels × 1000000

3. To get sensor resolution we then multiply X with the corresponding ratio:

Resolution horizontal: X × r Resolution vertical: X

35 mm equivalent aperture

Equivalent aperture (in 135 film terms) is calculated by multiplying lens aperture with crop factor (a.k.a. focal length multiplier).

LX3 equivalent aperture

Crop factor = 4.41Aperture = f2.0 - f2.8

35-mm equivalent aperture = (f2.0 - f2.8) × 4.41 = f8.8 - f12.3

D-LUX 4 equivalent aperture

Crop factor = 4.41Aperture = f2.0 - f2.8
